Hosted both **in-person** and **online**, this event will bring together researchers, artists, and educators to explore how mathematics intersects with various art forms, from painting and sculpture to digital media. Through **talks** and an **exhibit**, we aim to highlight the different ways in which mathematics can inspire art and art illuminate mathematics. ===== Focus ===== Our minisymposium aims to bring together researchers, artists, and educators interested in the synergy between mathematics and the arts. We seek presentations that illustrate: - **Artistic objects or projects** with strong mathematical components that also focus on communicating those components to the public. - **Educational practices or outreach efforts** showcasing how mathematics and the arts can be effectively combined in high school, university, or public settings. - **Mathematical objects or projects** that invite a discussion of their representations, e.g., using images, 3D prints, software tools, etc. We welcome contributions from a wide array of art forms (e.g., painting, sculpture, architecture, textiles, or music) that explicitly illuminate the mathematical content. ===== Talks ===== We particularly encourage talk proposals that highlight educational or outreach dimensions, including a clear learning outcome for audiences. For example, not merely stating that a piece by Escher contains mathematics, but identifying specific concepts such as wallpaper groups and explaining their significance. In addition, we invite presentations on illustrations of mathematical concepts or objects. These should not only convey the underlying mathematics but also spark discussion on visualization and illustration practices. ===== Exhibit ===== We will have **exhibit space** at the meeting, allowing participants to showcase: * 3D-printed or sculpted works * Printed artwork or posters * Digital works displayed on monitors * Other formats by arrangement If you wish to exhibit a piece, please email us at math.art.dmv2025@gmail.com so we can make the necessary arrangements. ===== Publishing in w/k ===== Selected authors will be invited to expand their abstracts into full contributions for publication in the **peer-reviewed online journal "w/k."** You can find examples of such articles from previous Mathematics and Art minisymposia here: 2020 articles and 2021 articles. ===== Submission Guidelines ===== * The **official language** of the minisymposium is **English**. * Each talk is allocated **20 minutes**, followed by **5 minutes** for questions and discussion. * To propose a talk, please send: * An **abstract** of **1,000 to 1,500 characters** (including spaces). * At least one **illustration** (e.g., an image, link to a video, or other supporting material). * **Deadline**: April 2nd, 2025 * **Submission email**: math.art.dmv2025@gmail.com ===== Important Dates ===== * **Deadline for Talk Proposals**: April 2nd, 2025 * **Acceptance Notification**: April 11th, 2025 * **Conference**: September 1–5, 2025, Linz, Austria (Minisymposium also accessible online) * **Notification for Contributions Selected for Publication**: October 2025 ===== Past Minisymposia ===== The past iterations were organized by Milena Damrau and Martin Skrodzki. * 2023 * 2022 * 2021 * 2020 ===== Contact ===== If you have any questions, please feel free to **email us** at math.art.dmv2025@gmail.com.
